EXPO2025 大阪・関西万博におけるポップアップステージの計画。
ステージのメインの構造である松の丸太の梁は、人力によって建て起こしされました。
半年という短い期間の万博。
万博は要らないという声もありましたが、リアルの場の力はやはり強いです。
しかし、オブジェのようなものを作るのはもはや違うのではないかと思っています。
実は、万博のプロポーザルに応募したキッカケは、建物が目的化しているオブジェのようないくつかの計画案をメディアで目にするようになってきて、強い違和感を覚えたからでした。
ポップアップステージ（西）では、最小の手数で、空間をいかにして作るかを考えました。それも、人間の力で作れるくらいのシンプルなもので十分ではないかと。モノを作ることでモノを否定し場と人の重要さを訴える、というのもなんだか倒錯しているようではありますが、ここで何か作らないとオブジェみたいな建物だらけになるのではないかと思ったからです。
特に、皆で参加して人力で建て起こしをして場を生み出す行為は、祇園祭の山鉾建てなど伝統的な祝祭からの学びであり、重要なコンセプトの一つです。そして松の丸太や松葉葺き・ステージの形などは、春日大社のおん祭仮御殿と芝舞台のオマージュです。おん祭、あれほど素晴らしくインパクトのある祝祭の場を日本人であっても知らない人がかなり居て、このプロジェクトを通して知ってもらえたらという思いもあります。
万博の工事については1年以上前から間に合う・間に合わないという議論になっていましたが、半年の開催期間である万博に1年以上など長い工期を要することにも違和感を感じ、一石を投じるべく、お祭りのように準備はしっかりするけれど、工事自体は極めて短工期で済む計画を考えました。ポップアップステージ（西）は、規模が小さいこともありますが、基礎より上の部分は1週間くらいの工事で完成しています。万博に求められる、祝祭のような場であれば、短工期でも十分に生み出せると考えています。

The main structure of the stage, consisting of pine log beams, was constructed
manually.
Despite voices against the Expo due to its short duration of six months,
the power of physical presence is undeniably strong.
However, we believe that creating objects akin to sculptures is no longer
appropriate. The reason we decided to apply for the Expo proposal was that
we started to see some plans in the media that seemed like objectified
buildings, and we felt a strong sense of discomfort about it.
For the Popup Stage West, we focused on how to create a space with minimal
effort. We aimed for a simple construction that could be built with human
power. Although it seems contradictory to create objects to oppose objects
and emphasize the importance of spaces and people, we feared that if we
didn't create something here, the Expo would be filled with objectified
buildings.
The act of creating a space by having everyone participate and build it
manually is inspired by traditional festivals like the Gion Festival's
float building and is an essential concept. The pine logs, pine leaf roofing,
and the shape of the stage pay homage to the Kasuga Shrine's Onmatsuri's
temporary shrine and grass stage. Many Japanese people are unaware of the
Onmatsuri, such a wonderful and impactful festival, and we hope that this
project will introduce it to more people.
The Expo's construction had been debated for over a year, whether it would
be completed on time or not, but we felt it was odd for a six-month-long
Expo to require such a long construction period of over a year. To make
a statement, we proposed a plan where preparations are thorough, like a
festival, but the construction itself is completed in an extremely short
period.
The Popup Stage West, being small in scale, was completed in about a week
for the portion above the foundation.
We believe that a festive space required for the Expo can be created even
with a short construction period.
